Reasons to Book a Chimney Cleaning
What actually prompts the call? Usually one of three things, and any of them is a reasonable starting point. Note that a fuel burning system deserves an annual professional inspection regardless of how much you used it, so a quiet season is not a reason to skip the conversation entirely.

What a Chimney Sweep Actually Removes
Cleaning means removing reachable soot, creosote, and loose debris from inside the system we quoted. Soot is the fine residue that coats surfaces. Creosote is the harder deposit that builds as wood burns, and it is the reason regular removal matters. Accessible obstructions get discussed as we find them. All of that is deposit removal within a defined system, which is a specific job with a specific end point. It is not an evaluation of how the chimney is built, and it is not a repair visit. When the work turns up damage or a venting concern, the right move is an inspection oriented referral, and we will tell you so rather than quietly working around it. How much deposit is waiting depends on what has been burned, how often, and how long it has been since the last service, which is why the scope is written per system instead of as a single flat job for the whole property.
Cleaning a Flue Is Not Inspecting It
The two get treated as one purchase all the time, and they are not interchangeable. Cleaning removes reachable deposits. An appropriate inspection evaluates the condition of the system: how it is built, what has moved, what has cracked, whether it vents the way it should. A clean flue can still have a problem in it, which is why we will not declare a chimney safe on the strength of a cleaning. Anyone who tells you a sweep doubles as a safety certificate is overselling. If a condition shows up that needs a closer look, you will hear that plainly, along with what kind of professional should take it from there.
What We Do Not Repair or Certify
Structural chimney repair sits outside this service. So does carbon monoxide diagnosis. Cracks, failed liners, leaks, flashing, caps, masonry work, and appliance defects are all beyond what a cleaning addresses, and we will not certify an unseen system as safe. There is no guarantee of fire prevention or of protection from carbon monoxide exposure attached to this work, from us or from anyone honest. Keep carbon monoxide alarms installed and maintained regardless of who cleans your chimney and when. Where a repair is needed, we point you to a provider qualified for it instead of stretching our own scope to cover it.
What Shapes the Estimate for Each Fireplace or Flue
Take a property with an open wood burning fireplace in the living room and a gas insert upstairs. Those are two appliances, two fuels, and two separate scopes, even though a caller might describe them as "the chimney" in one breath. The plan depends on the appliance, the fuel, the number of fireplaces or flues, how the system is put together, what has been done to it before, and how the roof and chimney can be reached. Do I need a cleaning or an inspection?
Often both, at different moments. Cleaning removes reachable soot, creosote, and loose debris. An appropriate inspection evaluates the condition of the system. They are related services and are not interchangeable, so tell us what you are worried about and we will say which one your situation calls for.
We barely use the fireplace. Can we skip service?
Light use lowers how fast deposits accumulate, but it does not remove the case for an annual professional inspection of fuel burning systems. Conditions can change without any burning at all. Tell us the last known cleaning or inspection date and how the appliance is used, and we will give you a straight answer.
Can you tell me my chimney is safe once it is clean?
No, and we will not say otherwise. Declaring a chimney safe requires appropriate inspection, and certifying an unseen system as safe is outside what this service does. Cleaning tells you the reachable deposits are gone. It does not tell you the structure is sound.
There are cracks in the masonry. Will cleaning help?
Cleaning does not repair cracks, failed liners, leaks, or appliance defects, so it will not address what you are seeing. Structural chimney repair is outside our scope. Mention the cracks when you write to us and we will point you toward a provider qualified to look at them.
What should I have ready before you arrive?
The appliance cool, movable items cleared from the work area, pets secured, and access to the appliance open. Nothing else is expected of you, and we do not want you climbing onto a roof to prepare for the appointment.

Before the Appointment, and When to Stop Using It
Let the fireplace cool completely well ahead of the visit. Move anything breakable off the hearth and out of the working area, secure pets somewhere else in the building, and clear the path to the appliance. That is all we ask of you. Please do not go up on the roof for us; access is our problem to solve, not yours. Between visits, if you suspect a venting problem or damage, stop using the appliance and seek an appropriate evaluation rather than waiting for the next scheduled cleaning.
