What We Will Not Repair, Certify, or Promise
The expectation we correct most often is that a sweep also fixes what it finds. It does not. Cracks, failed liners, leaks, flashing, caps, masonry, and appliance defects are outside the cleaning scope, and Willard Power Vac does not perform structural chimney repair. We do not diagnose carbon monoxide, we do not guarantee prevention of fire or carbon-monoxide exposure, and we do not certify a system nobody has appropriately examined.
What you get instead is a description of what we saw and a recommendation about who should look at it. Related cleaning work stays separately priced for the same reason. Why does each flue get its own price?
Because each one is its own system. The appliance attached, the fuel burned, the configuration, the service history, and the access can differ between two flues in the same building. Pricing them together would mean guessing on at least one of them.
Do you check for carbon monoxide?
No. Carbon-monoxide diagnosis is outside this service, and we do not guarantee prevention of exposure. Keep carbon-monoxide alarms installed and maintained, and treat any suspected venting problem as a reason to stop using the appliance and get an appropriate evaluation.
We think we had a chimney fire. What should we do?
Stop using the system and arrange an appropriate evaluation before anything else. Cleaning does not repair cracks, failed liners, or other damage, so a sweep is not the right first call in that situation. Once the condition has been properly assessed, cleaning may have a place in the plan.
Will you need roof access, and should I get up there first?
Roof and chimney access is one of the details we ask about when estimating, and how it gets handled on the day is our responsibility. Do not climb up to check anything for us. Describe what you can see from the ground and leave the rest to the visit.
Is an annual inspection still needed if we clean regularly?
Yes, because the two do different jobs. Cleaning removes reachable deposits; an appropriate inspection evaluates the condition of the system. Frequent cleaning does not answer the condition question, and we will not treat it as though it did.
Before the Sweep Arrives, and When to Stop Burning
Preparation means four things: let the fireplace cool completely, clear movable items away from the hearth area, keep pets out of the work zone, and make sure the appliance can be reached when we arrive. Roof access is ours to sort out. Please do not go up there on our behalf.
One conservative instruction is worth following even if it costs you a fire or two. If you suspect a venting problem or you can see damage, stop using the system and have it appropriately evaluated before lighting it again.
